Kotor is an administrative, cultural, religious, educational and economic center of Kotor Bay. Throughout the history of Kotor and Kotor Bay maritime navigation and foreign trade were the main occupations of the locals. That is why with time Kotor became one of the most important trade centers in this part of Adriatic coast. Kotor is also a home to The Maritime Museum of Montenegro, TheInstitute of Marine Biology, Maritime Faculty of The Montenegro University that has grown out of Maritime College with a three hundred year history, “Ship-owners’ Association of Montenegro” and «Boka Marine» Fraternity. Thanks to the unique mixture of the different cultures in 1979 Kotor’s old town center became a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
